Året är 1982. "Son of Rambow" är namnet på skolkamraterna Will och Lees nyfilmatisering av Stallone-filmen "First Blood", inspelad med en stor videokamera och med ännu större ambitioner. Will är en blyg skolpojke som växer upp i en strängt religiös omgivning. Moderna företeelser som tv och film är förbjudna. En dagvisar Lee Carter, skolans värsting, honom en dålig videoinspelning av den första filmen om Rambo varpå hans livliga fantasi vaknar till liv. Han dras med i Lee Carters nya filmprojekt, en egen version av "First Blood". De två pojkarna ger sig i smyg ut i skogen för att filma och deras hemlighetsmakeri och oskuldsfulla ambitioner leder snart till en stark vänskap.
