Accompanied by journalist Peter West (Ian McCulloch), ethnologist Brian (Al Cliver) and photographer Susan (Auretta Gay), Anne sets sail for the region of the Caribbean where her father was last reported alive, but before long is under attack from terrifying flesh-eating zombies.

In 'The Gatecrasher', Edward Charlton (David Warner) purchases a mirror which contains a ghost with a craving for human blood. 'An Act of Kindness' follows Christopher Lowe (Ian Bannen) who steals a military medal from the shop and begins an affair with a woman with inexplicable powers. In 'The Elemental', after Reggie Warren (Ian Carmichael) cheats the proprietor, a malevolent spirit follows him home. Finally, in 'The Door', William Seaton (Ian Ogilvy) buys an antique door which leads to a sinister chamber belonging to an occultist who consumes the souls of those who enter.

The story follows a puritan family living on a farm in New England in 1630. When their baby son suddenly goes missing, the superstitious parents William (Ralph Ineson) and Katherine (Kate Dickie) begin to wrongly suspect their daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) is responsible and capable of witchcraft. When further sinister things happen such as their crops failing, suspicion and fear begins to tear the family apart, driving them to commit heinous acts. All the while, they become more vulnerable to the real culprit that lurks in the woods behind their home.

Set in 17th century England, Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt) performs in a travelling circus and is the star attraction as a result of a childhood punishment that has resulted in him having a fixed and grotesque smile. Ashamed of this disfigurement Gwynplaine only ever shows his smile when on stage. When it transpires that Gwynplaine is descended from royalty he is offered an opportunity to marry Duchess Josiana (Olga Baclanova). However. agreeing to the marriage will mean turning his back on the circus as well as ending his relationship with Dea (Mary Philbin), the only person that Gwynplaine feels is capable of truly loving him.
